Discover the Art of Mattress Sizing

So you need a bed, but you don’t know what mattress size to buy. And while we’d all love a King mattress, that’s not always a possibility.

There are many factors to consider when choosing between mattress sizes, including the size of the bedroom, the number of sleepers, the age of the sleeper, your sleep habits, and your budget.

To help you choose the best bed sizes for your exact sleeping situation, we’ve created an interactive tool that will help you calculate the ideal mattress for your bedroom and your sleep patterns. Just answer a few quick questions for your own customized sleep solution.

Bed Dimensions and Mattress Size Calculator

Discover what mattress size is perfect for you:

Q1. How many people will regularly sleep in the bed?

Q2: How old is the oldest person that will regularly sleep in the bed?

Q3: Do you need extra room for overnight visitors (children, pets, etc.)?

Want to Understand Why We Recommended That Mattress Size For You?

At PerfectSense, our sleep experts know mattress sizes and they know sleep. We combined this knowledge to help you take the guesswork out of picking the right mattress size.

Here are the key elements about different bed dimensions that went into the creation of our Mattress Size Calculator.

Single Mattress Dimensions: 39’’ x 75’’ (99 cm x 190.5 cm)

Best Suited For: Young children. Outside of a crib mattress, a Single/Twin mattress is the smallest mattress option available.

Sleeping Room: Single/Twin mattresses only have room for one sleeper.

Room Size: Single/Twin beds will fit in any room size, but are typically best for smaller rooms or larger rooms where multiple beds are required for siblings or roommates.

So who should buy a Single/Twin bed? Typically those who have younger children, a small room such as a dorm room, guest rooms with multiple beds, or people who need a mattress for a daybed or bunk bed.

Full/Double Mattress Dimensions: 54’’ x 75’’ (137 cm x 190.5 cm)

Best Suited For: Single sleepers under 6 feet tall.

Sleeping Room: A Full bed can comfortably fit one sleeper, but if you have a partner, or sleep often with your kids or pets, you’re going to be more comfortable in a larger size.

Room Size: At only 4.5 feet wide, a Full mattress can easily fit in most rooms.

So who should buy a Full/Double bed? Someone under 6 feet tall with a limited or moderate amount of space—who doesn’t need to share the bed. If you’re taller, you should opt for longer options such as a Queen or King mattress size. Full beds make a great option for a guest bedroom where you may have limited space but want to give your guests a comfortable night’s sleep.

Queen Mattress Dimensions: 60’’ x 80’’ (152.4 cm x 203.2 cm)

Best Suited For: Nearly all sleepers, including couples and single sleepers of any height.

Sleeping Room: Queen beds have enough room for couples to sleep comfortably, as long as they don’t share the bed with kids or pets and they are not heavy tossers and turners.

Room Size: Queen mattresses are best suited in a bedroom of at least 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters). That gives you enough room for side tables, drawers, and walking space.

So who should buy a Queen bed? Any single sleeper or couple with a bedroom of at least 10 feet by 10 feet. If you’re a couple that also shares the bed with pets, or one of you tosses and turns at night, you should consider a King mattress if space allows. If you plan on hosting couples in your guest room, a Queen mattress is often the best choice, as it offers enough space at an affordable price.

King Mattress Dimensions: 76’’ x 80’’ (193 cm x 203.2 cm)

Best Suited For: Any single sleeper or couple who wants the most possible sleeping room.

Sleeping Room: A King mattress can comfortably sleep a couple in addition to their kids and/or pets.

Room Size: As a King bed is nearly 7 feet wide, it’s recommended that your bedroom is at least 12 feet by 12 feet. This will give you enough room for traditional bedroom furniture plus walking space.

So who should buy a King bed? Anyone with a large enough bedroom (at least 12’ x 12’) who wants ample sleeping space. If your kids often sneak into bed with you, or you sleep with a pet, a King size mattress is the safest bet. Or, if you really want to treat your guests like—well—a King, it’s a great option to spoil your visitors.

Cost $200–$1,200+ Because a Single mattress is the smallest size, it’s the most affordable. Yet, mattresses vary widely in price. $300–$1,400+ There’s typically a price jump of at least $100 between a Single and a Double, or between 20-40% more. $400–$1,600+ The Queen mattress is a great deal for your money, offering more than enough room for two sleepers while only being marginally more expensive than a Double. $500–$2,000+ King mattresses cost 15-30% more than a Queen mattress, and while they are the most expensive option, they are a great bang for your buck.
Room for pets/kids? King beds are the best option if you want to sleep with pets or children. A King bed should comfortably be able to sleep even the most space-consuming pets. A Single/Twin bed may give you enough space to squeeze in a small pet, but it’s not recommended that you try to share a Single with another person or child. A single sleeper would be able to fit a small/medium-sized pet into a Double bed with them, but there wouldn’t be enough room for a couple plus a pet. A Queen bed can comfortably sleep a couple plus a small pet, or a single sleeper and a child or pet of any size. A couple may be able to fit in bed with a small-to-medium-sized pet.
Summary A Single/Twin bed is a great option if you’re tight on space and budget. A Double is a good option for a single sleeper, but couples should upgrade to a Queen or King. Every couple should start with a Queen, as it’s a budget-friendly, yet spacious option. If there’s room for a King bed in your budget and your bedroom, this is the best option for every couple. You’ll have plenty of room to stretch out and have the perfect night’s sleep.
