Retail Therapy for The Perfect Black Friday

The holidays are an exciting time of year. But if you work in retail, you are going to need more than a few cups of coffee to keep you in the holiday spirit … especially on Black Friday.

You’re not alone—we get it.

We're here to help you find the perfect sleep solution so you can wake up well rested and ready to handle anything that comes your way.

Why sleep is important for retail workers

Any retail worker can tell you that a goodnight's sleep is the key to getting through a long shift. But did you know your sleep has an impact on your mental health, too?

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, we become more tired and irritated. It's no wonder why our sleeping habits worsen around the holiday season.

Not only does sleep affect our mood and stress levels, it also influences how our body performs throughout the day. You may begin to feel more tired if you aren't getting the proper amount of sleep.

Your sleep also plays a significant role in your daily commute.

A study conducted by The Drive found that driving drowsy is just as dangerous as driving under the influence. In fact, if you’ve been awake for more than 17 hours you’re equally as impaired as a driver who’s under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Make sure you’re getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. You’ll wake up feeling rested and alert. And you’ll get to work on time … safely.

Surviving the Black Friday Craze

Eat healthy

Who would have thought that putting good food into your body could help improve your mental health? It's no surprise that long Canadian winters tend to come with comfort food cravings. And with all those tempting holiday treats, it can be tough to maintain a healthy diet.

Still, you’ll feel better physically and mentally if you make the effort to balance those festive feasts with some healthier choices.

Keep in mind, too, that spending so much time indoors can throw off your body’s internal meal-time clock. Try incorporating foods that are rich in nutrients and high in protein to give you the boost you need this holiday.

Here are some of our faves:

1. Porridge

Start your day off right with a simple and healthy breakfast alternative. Porridge is an excellent option for anyone on the go. It's also great for those who have trouble digesting food early in the morning. Try adding fruits, nuts, or seeds to give it that extra something special.

2. Soups

Soups are the perfect comfort food for staying warm this season. They’re also an easy way to get your daily source of veggies. Try making a soup the night before and taking it for lunch. You can find lots of inspiration for fun DIY recipes on Pinterest. Our personal favourite is hearty chicken noodle with carrots and celery.

3. Fruits and vegetables

There’s no such thing as too many veggies! These little guys are ideal for snacking throughout the day. One quick tip: swap out fresh for frozen fruits and vegetables—they’ll last longer. Try including them in smoothies with Greek yogurt. Yum!

Stay hydrated

Water is everything! If you're in the fast-food industry, this should be a no brainer. Ask yourself, “How much water am I consuming throughout the day?” Now take that number and triple it.

Stay hydrated to avoid migraines and to feel alert and focused. Make sure you keep a full water bottle under your till or near your workstation for easy access.
