Double/Full Size Bed Dimensions & Other Interesting Facts

Some people call it a double mattress. Others call it a full mattress.

Is there even a difference between a full-size bed and double bed?

The answer to that question is “no.” A full bed and double bed are exactly the same thing. Tomato, tomahto.

Both beds measure 54 inches wide by 75 inches long (or 137 by 190 centimetres, if you prefer). This makes it larger than a twin, but smaller than a queen-size mattress.

In this blog post, we’ll answer any questions you have about double/full mattresses.

How wide is a double compared to other mattresses?

In terms of size, the double falls between the twin and the queen.

Twin mattresses measure 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. By comparison, the double is 15 inches wider than the twin, although it is the same in length.

Queen mattresses are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. This makes them 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than the double. As such, the queen tends to be a better choice for tall people or couples.

Who should buy a double bed?

Single Sleepers

The double bed is a great choice for single sleepers who love to stretch out. The double is 16 inches wider than a twin bed.

They’re a great compromise between a twin and a queen because they don’t take up as much bedroom real estate as a queen, but they do allow for a bit more room to spread out at night compared to a twin.

With a length of 75 inches, the double is a good choice for most adults who are average height. However, if you are over 6 feet, there’s a good chance that your toes will be dangling off the edge of the bed.

If you are taller, you can sleep on a diagonal to make the most of your double bed, or you can choose to invest in a queen bed, which is 5 inches longer.

The double is also a good choice for those who like to sleep cuddled up with their pets or young children.

Couples

If you and your significant other really, really like to cuddle up at night, you could probably make a double bed work. But these days, most couples opt for a queen (or king) mattress.

A queen offers an extra 6 inches of width, which doesn’t sound like much, but when you’re balancing on the edge of the mattress, you’ll notice it.

Guest Rooms

Double beds tend to be a good choice for guest rooms. They’re more affordable than a queen bed because of their smaller size, and they can easily accommodate single adults. If necessary, they can still fit two adults for short stays.

Plus, with the smaller footprint they tend to fit better into the rooms that get designated as guest bedrooms.

RVs

It depends on the bed frame built into your RV, but doubles are often a good fit. The double is small enough to fit inside the RV well, yet large enough to sleep one or two people.

Many RVs are built to accommodate a short queen, which measures a few inches shorter than a traditional queen. A double will also fit in this space and they are much more common than specialty RV mattresses (although if you’re looking for an RV mattress, we have them available here).

If you are looking for a specific type of mattress, and are struggling to find a short queen that fits the bill, take a look at double mattresses. They are very common, so there are lots of different options to choose from, including spring, memory foam, latex, and wool.

History of the full-size bed

For many years, the double bed was the most popular bed in North America. In fact, prior to 1950, the double was the most popular mattress choice for couples.

This was largely due to the fact that queen and king beds as we know them did not exist yet. The king and queen came into popularity in the 1950s when Simmons Mattress Company started making larger mattresses to accommodate taller Americans.

Over time, most North Americans have become taller, making the queen and the king a more practical solution for most couples.

Today, the double is mainly reserved for children or single adults who like a bit more sleeping room.

How big does my bedroom need to be to fit a double mattress?

As a general rule, you will want to leave at least 3 feet around the bed to walk and easily get in and out of bed. Anything less will feel a bit cramped.

With that in mind, a double bed would fit in a room that is at least 9 by 9.5 feet.

Doubles are also a good choice for rooms that aren’t just bedrooms. If you want to tuck a cozy reading area or a study desk in your room, you won’t want your mattress to dominate the whole room.

The smaller size of the double mattress will allow you to bring other furniture pieces into the room without creating congestion.

What size rug should I put under my double bed?

The decision to add a rug to your bedroom is about more than fashion. It’s also about comfort and functionality.

There is nothing better than hopping out of bed in the morning without hesitation and knowing that your feet are going to get a soft, warm welcome to the day.

A rug encourages you to hope out of bed and seize the day rather than stay swaddled up in bed, dreading the cold hardwood waiting to greet you.

If you have a double bed, the minimum size rug you will want to buy is a 80 by 120 inches. This will allow enough space for you to walk on either side of the bed while staying on the rug.

Buying Bed Sheets for Your Full Size Bed

Bed sheet options for a full size mattress are plentiful. They are a very common mattress size, and most stores will carry sheets for these beds.

Fitted double-bed sheets will be 54 by 75 inches and will generally be 7 to 9 inches deep.

If you have a topper on your mattress, you may want to look for deep pocket sheets that allow for the extra depth that your topper adds to the mattress. Deep pocket sheets are usually 15 inches deep.

It is also possible to buy extra deep sheets that are even deeper.

How much does a double/full mattress cost?

When it comes to choosing your mattress size, many adults choose to purchase a double mattress as opposed to a queen because it is more affordable than a queen-size mattress, yet the double offers the same level of functionality.

The exact price of a double mattress can range pretty extensively depending on what type of materials you prefer.

As a general rule, latex mattresses tend to be some of the most expensive, while bed-in-a-box mattresses tend to be some of the most affordable.

Bed-in-a-box mattresses have revolutionized the experience of buying a mattress. You can purchase a bed from the comfort of your couch and, often, it will arrive on your doorstep within a week.
